The Menai Bridge Suspension Bridge itself is a special sight and pleasure to travel over, which was designed by Thomas Telford as the first modern suspension bridge in the world. Telford was issued the task to improve the route from London to Holyhead – and since the Isle of Anglesey had no fixed attachment to the mainland, the bridge was selected as the most appropriate method of completing this task. This was required as Holyhead was to be increased as one of the principal terminals to Dublin in Ireland. The bridge had to be built in a way that allowed Royal Navy ships of 100 feet tall to pass beneath the deck at high tide, while being constructed without the use of scaffolding. The bridge began construction in 1819 and was finally opened to much fanfare on 30th January 1826, reducing the journey time from London to Holyhead by 9 hours.
The Anglesey Coastal Path passes beneath the bridge, which a long-distance footpath venturing around the Isle of Anglesey and North Wales, spanning at 124 miles. This special route follows the coast, almost making a complete route of the island. The path is well signposted and is often walked as a challenge by walkers, which typically takes between 7 and 10 days to complete. Visitors to the area are always recommended to enjoy sections of the coastal path, whilst checking out the Menai Suspension Bridge.
