World Food Day 2020 takes place on Friday 16th October this year. The day celebrates everything from pizza, pasta and bread to cakes, pies and… bara brith?
We want to use this day to highlight some of the amazing which have come from Wales – after all, the traditional foods are a great part of Welsh history. You can celebrate the day by perhaps cooking some for yourselves, or by donating food to a local food bank for those who don’t have the privilege of indulging.
What dishes come from Wales?
- Glamorgan Sausages
These aren’t like typical sausages – there is no meat in them! They’re often dubbed vegetarian sausages.
These sausage-shaped treats are made from a combination of Caerphilly cheese, leeks. And breadcrumbs. There is no sausage casing, so eggs are used to bind the mixture together before frying. They should be served hot and with a mustard dip!
- Anglesey Eggs
This traditional Welsh dinner is made up from hard-boiled eggs and mashed potatoes smothered in a thick, creamy sauce made using leeks, butter and cheese, and topped with more cheese – definitely a treat.
This dish is quite substantial in itself but is often served alongside grilled sausages or gammon.
- Welsh Cakes
Welsh cakes are a sweet griddle baked delicacy made simply from flour, butter or lard, eggs, and sugar. Each region has a slightly different recipe often including things such as lemon zest, raisins, currants, spices, and different types of flour.
These are best enjoyed with a pot of tea and served with jam and butter.
- Welsh Rarebit
Welsh rarebit is often referred to as posh cheese on toast, but to call it just that would be sacrilege! Welsh rarebit is traditionally made using cheddar melted and combined with butter and cream or a welsh ale, and mustard. This is then poured over toast and popped under the grill.
The dish used to be called Welsh rabbit, and derives from the fact that the Welsh were known as bad hunters – so they would have this instead!
- Bara Brith
Bara Brith is pretty much Wales’ national fruitcake. It is made by letting dried fruit soak in black tea overnight, which are then folded into a mix of flour, brown sugar, marmalade, eggs, cinnamon, and spices.
Enjoy this one fresh from the oven and spread with Welsh salted butter.
