With lockdown ending on the horizon, it might be time to start planning a few day trips you can take for when we are allowed to do so. Those of us who have a four-legged best friend know that there is nothing more enjoyable than strolling along a sandy beach in summer, playing with a ball and having a splash around in the sea – both you and the dog! Add a nice lunch with a cold beer or spritzer into the mix and you’ve got the perfect summer day.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of beaches around the Llyn Peninsula which now have dog bans over the summer, some running right through from May till October. Don’t fear, we have put together a list of a few beaches where you can still take your furry friends.
Carreg Wen Beach, Porthmadog
Carreg Wen Beach is a sheltered and sandy beach located in Borth-y-Gest, Tremadog Bay. This is just a 25-30 minute drive from us in Pontllyfni, and will serve as the perfect day out. Park up in the facilities in Borth-y-Gest and make your way down for the day.
The picturesque spot has collections of large rocks, backed with sand dunes, hills and grassland. There are fantastic views across the estuary and bay, and over to the dramatic mountains of the National Park on the other side.
The beach is popular for sunbathers, birdwatchers, and walkers alike. However, it is not recommended to swim here as there is a presence of strong currents.
Afon Wen Beach, Pwllheli
Afon Wen beach is on the south side of the Llyn, at a mid point between Criccieth and Pwllheli. This is again around a 30 minute drive from Westpoint Resort, but a little off the beaten track. There are limited parking spots down by the beach, so either get there early or park up and walk down.
The beach here is a mixture of sand sand shingles. There are great coastal views on the front, and the peaks of Snowdonia to appreciate at the back, a super scenic beach to relax on.
If you’re into your fishing, you’ll be happy to hear that the beach is a well known place for casting your rod. The Afon Wen and Afon Dwyfor rivers both enter the sea here.
Porth Neigwl (Hell’s Mouth), Abersoch
Porth Neigwl, nicknamed Hell’s Mouth is on the far side of Abersoch, around a 45 minute to an hours drive from us.
Hell’s Mouth is usually a bit quieter than the other beaches in Abersoch. It sits away from business in the tourist town, and is ideal if you want somewhere slightly more secluded so your dog can have a run around.
You’re likely to see lots of surfers down this way thanks to the massive waves. This is something you also might want to keep in mind before either of you jump in for a swim.
During high tide the beach is quite pebbly, but as it goes down it will reveal beautiful sand.
