Ancient Hillforts of North Wales
North Wales is home to a great many hillforts, dating back to the Iron Age, Dark Ages, Middle Ages and beyond. These ancient sites are not only steeped in myth and legend, but many also offer breathtaking views and a real sense of history underfoot. Whether you’re visiting for a family holiday or a walking retreat, exploring these historic spots adds depth to any North Wales getaway.
Dinas Dinlle
Our local hillfort, Dinas Dinlle, is a perfect place to start. It’s just a short walk from West Point Beach Resort and steeped in local mythology. According to legend, this was the childhood home of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, a hero from the Mabinogion, a medieval Welsh collection of myths and folklore. In the tale of Blodeuwedd, Lleu is tricked into revealing how he can be killed, is assassinated, transformed into an eagle, and eventually returns to rule Gwynedd.

Castell Cawr
Castell Cawr sits on a limestone hill above Abergele and is partially hidden in woodland. Though small, this two-hectare fort was naturally protected by sheer cliffs to the north. Today it is accessible via public woodland paths and maintained by the Woodland Trust. The area is also known for its caves, inhabited by lesser horseshoe bats.
Caer y Twr
On the windswept slopes of Holyhead Mountain on Anglesey’s Holy Island lies Caer y Twr. This Iron Age hillfort still boasts standing stone walls up to two metres high. Its elevated position provides dramatic views and is perfect for those combining historical exploration with coastal walking adventures.
Moel Fenlli
Situated in the Clwydian Hills near the Clwyd Valley, Moel Fenlli is one of the region’s largest hillforts. The site covers 10 hectares and is linked to the semi-legendary King Benlli, said to have ruled here until divine fire destroyed his fortress for defying Saint Germanus.
This is a great spot for hiking, with the Offa’s Dyke Path passing just below the fort. You’ll also find around 24 hut platforms within the enclosure and an ancient spring at the centre.
